I'm assuming, that being an electrician, you passed your physics exam. He was right. It's what I learned in physics.

I leave mine on 24/7. Have for years. I suppose it draws one or two lightbulbs worth of electricity, so I'm sure it is a noticable amount in my electric bill. I'll pay the extra few bucks per month though as I feel my time is worth more than that. I don't want to sit there and wait while the computer boots up.
On the bright side, it helps to heat the room in the winter.

I shut my gaming rig off. It uses more electricity than anything else in my entire apartment.

Unless there's a specific reason for me to AFK, if I'm going to be gone for more than a couple hours I shut my computer off. Takes more electricity, and I want to conserve it.

i play with a laptop (which uses very little electric).
i bet those new 8800 cards and quad processors must be expensive to run....they easily chew 500w.

Just food for thought.

Just because my computer has a 540W power supply, doesn't mean it's drawing 540 watts at all times. It means it has the capacity to do so. I'll stick with a couple of lightbulbs worth. I'll even guess it's about 2 60 watters to be more exact.

My computer keeps so much of a hum noise that I can't sleep if it's on. I usually sleep a lot better if it's completely silent and dark anyway. Plus what's the point of keeping a computer on if you're not doing anything?
[edit] Although during the day if I'm off to somewhere, I often leave it on if I have p2p or torrents running.

Since the PC is in my bedroom I have to turn it off.. three huge fans WILL keep me awake..
So basicly, my PC is on from 5:00pm until 12:30-1:00 am. The rest of the time it is off.. I am not home

if u have an 8800 and a quad u're likely to be using at least 350w even idle.

I found some ballbark figures here:
http://michaelbluejay.com/electricity/computers.html
Since it's from the Internet, it can't be flase. LOL! Really though, it just depends upon your system. I'm overclocked, but I'm still guessing I use about as much as I had originally guessed. YMMV.

sounds a little low to me. Also, the biggest monitor listed is 17". Does anyone still use a montior that small?
Anyway .... fun stuff to toss around and discuss.
